Dream C70/71/72/77
1957-68
250cc and 305cc SOHC twin-cylinder with pressed steel frames.
Honda’s first move into mid-range motorcycles started with the Dream C70 launched in 1957. A twin-cylinder OHC 4-cycle engine with a dry-sump fitted in a pressed steel chassis. The C70 was enhanced by the Dream C71 with electric-start in the following year.
In further development the Dream C72 was launched in 1960.
These models were referred to as mid-range Touring models.
There were a number of variations to these models including CS71; CA71; CE71 and CA72. Early Japan home- market models normally had single seats with a rear carrier and export models were normally fitted with dual-seats. The CA referred to North America market models. Later models of thee types were well equipped with electric start; indicators; twin mirrors etc.
The Dream CE71 is probably the rarest version. Fitted with tubular handlebars, low sports exhaust pipes and dual seat, with an angular fuel tank (similar to the CB92) this model was exported to the USA and Europe, but only c.400 units were produced and they were all recalled and believed to have been mostly scrapped!
These 250cc models were soon to be joined by 305cc models in C75; C76; CA76; CS76 (with high-level exhausts) and C77/CA77. All similar in design but with a more powerful engine.
Development of these models continued until 1968/69 with later models featuring an all-new wet-sump engine.
A further re-development of the engine was used in the Sports models of the CB72 and CB77. See separate listing.
