NR-750, 1992

Watch this Honda Factory video of the NR in action.

NR (RC40)
1992

748cc liquid-cooled 90°V4, oval piston, DOHC, 32-valves
producing 125bhp@14,000rpm

The NR programme was a 4-stroke V4 motorcycle series started by Honda in 1979 with the 500cc NR500 Grand Prix racer that used oval pistons.

Honda was always keen to promote 4-stroke technology in racing but after 4-years of development the NR programme was sadly not a great success story! The NR500 was finally replaced in 1982 by the NS500 2-stroke V3 model for GP racing.

The NR racing programme did reappear in 1987 with a NR750 Endurance racer which did achieve some success in Australia.

The oval piston concept allowed for eight valves per cylinder which generated more power due to the increased air/fuel mixture throughput and compression.

In 1992 Honda produced a small number of a 750cc road-legal model, the NR (often mistakenly referred to as the NR750), with a 90-degree V-angle engine design.

Whereas the NR500 had used an oval piston with straight sides, the road going NR used an elliptical piston with curved long sides.

The NR became the most expensive production bike at the time when it was selling for almost £35,000.00!

A total of only 300 units were ever produced! Today, an original example can reach over £60,000.00 at Auction!

Selling an NR as a Honda dealer...
In 1992 I owned a Honda dealership in North London and managed to obtain one of the 33 NR units to retail. Receiving a phone call one day from a chap in N.Ireland asking if our NR was still available for sale, a reply of yes was given. On opening the shop the following day I found the same chap waiting on the doorstep with £35,000.00 in cash in two Tesco shopping bags! Luckily then, we still had a local bank and a helpful bank manager to verify his payment!
